Daily fantasy sports: legal in 47 of 64 parishes

Daily fantasy sports were legalized by a November 2018 referendum (Act 322 of 2018), governed by the Louisiana Fantasy Sports Contests Act, R.S. 27:301 et seq. A 2020 amendment (R.S. 27:305) defines "participation" as paying an entry fee — so it is unlawful to enter a paid contest while physically located in a no-vote parish, regardless of where the operator is based.

Key takeaway

The 9 sports-betting holdout parishes are a subset of the 17 DFS no-vote parishes. The 8 parishes that allow sports betting but not paid DFS are: Allen, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Grant, Jefferson Davis, Morehouse, Richland, and Vernon. If you're in one of those, you can bet on sports but not enter paid DFS contests from there.

This page is educational — it explains where betting is legal, not advice to wager. Always confirm you're physically in an eligible parish and 21 or older before placing a bet. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-522-4700.
